Michigan’s forest industry
encompasses 18.6 million acres of forestland, the fifth largest
in the U.S. and
represents $12 billion and 200,000 jobs in tourism, recreation and
forest-related industries. Primary Power
Fuels operates three companies at that specialize in
the collection and processing of virgin wood products and wood fiber
gleaned from the waste stream, such as crates and pallets.
HILLMAN
FOREST PRODUCTS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Primary Power International,
is a significant player in that industry.
Acquired in 2004
with the intent of securing and stabilizing wood fuel supplies
for Hillman Power Company and surrounding wood-fired power plants,
Hillman Forest Products has become far more than a source of energy
wood. It provides total tree harvesting services for dimensional lumber and process wood chips for the manufacture of
hardboard, chipboard and paper.
Grade logs make up 10% of Hillman’s
production, 40% goes into process chips and 50% of its output is
energy wood, which includes contract grinding and transport of wood
fuel to area biomass plants.
Hillman Forest Products is certified through the Sustainable
Forestry Initiative.
